Discovering Samos Island: A Greek Odyssey of Intentional Exploration

In the refreshing embrace of an October morning, as the first rays of light danced across the Aegean, Samos Island – a hidden gem in the Greek archipelago – began to stir. This island, a canvas of history and natural allure, was once my home, and returning in 2023 wasn’t just a homecoming but a journey of intentional exploration, a chance to rediscover the island’s secrets that have escaped me for so long.

Amidst the tranquil off-peak season, Samos reveals itself in a new light away from the usual hustle of tourists. It was an opportunity to reconnect with the island’s serene beauty and soul, unhurried and genuine. This time, my travels were guided by a deeper purpose, echoing the ethos of Intentional Living Magazines theme for January – a time for setting intentions and embracing mindful journeys.

Every encounter and experience has been infused with newfound perspective and meaning as I navigated through Samos. From the island’s ancient pathways to its vibrant local life, this was more than just a visit; it was a Greek odyssey, a quest for a richer, more profound connection with the place and its people.

In this article, I invite you to discover the many delights of Samos Island, and together, we explore its culinary treasures, rest in its welcoming abodes, and immerse ourselves in a culture steeped in tradition and history. Let us set our intentions and embark on a journey that transforms travel into exploring place and self.

Cultural and Historical Activities

Markou Olive Oil Factory in Koumeika.jpg

Markou Olive Oil Factory in Koumeika

My visit to the Markou Olive Oil Factory was an eye-opening experience into the sustainable and innovative world of olive oil production. Nestled in the quaint village of Koumeika, this factory stands as a testament to the island’s deep-rooted connection with olive cultivation, a tradition that dates back centuries.

Here, the reverence for the olive tree is matched only by the commitment to zero waste. It was fascinating to learn that every part of the olive tree is used, with the pits ingeniously fueling the machines that press the oil. This circular approach to production honours the environment and reflects the islanders’ respect for their natural resources.

The tour, led by a member of the Markou family, was rich in information, detailing the meticulous process and the dedication behind each bottle of olive oil. Their love for their craft was evident in every aspect of the process, from the careful selection of olives to the final press and the quality control. It was fascinating to learn that they also produce different infusions using local herbs and fruits, such as rosemary and orange, unique to the Markou brand. These infusion oils are so pure they can flavour food without added ingredients.

The visit culminated in a delightful tasting session, where we savored the rich, flavorful oils, each leaving a distinct impression on the palate. The experience was even more memorable with a thoughtful parting gift – a bottle of their finest blend, a token that encapsulated the essence of Samos’s olive oil heritage. This visit provided insight into the sustainable practices of olive oil production and gave me a deeper appreciation for this golden elixir of the Mediterranean and its many health benefits.

Vakakis Winery and the Muscat Grape

Vakakis Winery and the Muscat Grape

The Vakakis Winery is not just a place where wine is made; it’s a narrative woven into the fabric of the island’s history and culture. Stepping into the original house where the Vakakis family once lived, I was struck by the sense of tradition and a nod to simpler yet profoundly richer times.

This family-run winery has evolved significantly over the years, with its exquisite wines now reaching connoisseurs across the globe. Each bottle tells a story, a tribute to the legacy of Pythagoras, the legendary mathematician and philosopher born on this island.

Vakakis believe wine is culture, with names such as Pyramid, Theorem, and Pythagoras Cup. The winery’s connection to Pythagoras is more than just symbolic; it embodies the wisdom and harmony he championed.

The highlight of the visit was a delightful tasting session featuring the winery’s best selections, including the sweet wine Epogdoon, made from the famous Muscat grape, a variety that Samos is renowned for due to its winter rainfall and summer Meltemi breezes.

Accompanied by a plate of fresh bread, cheese, and olives, each sip of wine was an exploration of flavors and history. The Vakakis family’s passion for winemaking shines through in every aspect of the experience, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the essence of Samos’s wine culture and enjoy a glorious afternoon under the shade of the olive trees.

Ceramic and Honey Production in the Mountains Around Koumaradei

Ceramic and Honey Production in the Mountains Around Koumaradei

The drive through the mountainous heart of Samos, from the southwest to the southeast, is a journey into the soul of traditional craftsmanship. After winding through the villages of Pagondas and Spatharaioi, I was drawn into the world of Koumaradei, renowned for its handcrafted ceramics. In the small, bustling workshops, artisans shape clay with expertise passed down through generations, their hands weaving stories into each piece.

Among the many treasures, the famed Pythagoras cup stands out – a cleverly designed vessel by Pythagoras himself that spills its contents if filled beyond a certain level, embodying the principle of moderation. This unique creation not only showcases the skill of the local artisans but also serves as a whimsical reminder of the island’s philosophical heritage. It is a must-buy souvenir and a fun talking point for diner parties.

Further along, in Pirgos, the air is sweet with the scent of honey. Here, beekeeping is an art form, with hives dotting the landscape. Roadside stores laden with jars of golden honey offer a taste of this nectar, each variety telling a story of the diverse flora of Samos. This drive is not just a journey through stunning landscapes and Island vistas but a passage through the living traditions of ceramics and honey production, integral threads in the cultural tapestry of Samos.

Spiliani Monastery Cave Church and Eupalinos Tunnel Pythagorio

Spiliani Monastery, Cave Church and Eupalinos Tunnel – Pythagorio

Nestled on top of a hill, the Spiliani Monastery in Pythagorio is a bastion of peace and history, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the charming town below. Its whitewashed walls and striking belfry are quintessential of Greek Orthodox architecture, creating a serene atmosphere, further accentuated by the occasional purring of cats basking in the warm sunshine.

Behind the church lies its most intriguing feature – a historic cave, a sanctuary of cool, damp air that starkly contrasts the Grecian heat. This cave is not just a natural wonder but a silent witness to the tumultuous history of Samos. During the Ottoman invasions, it served as a hidden refuge, a haven where women and children were concealed from the perils of war. This historical use permeates the cave with a profound sense of resilience and sanctity.

Today, the Spiliani Monastery and its cave church are more than just religious sites; they are poignant reminders of the island’s past struggles and triumphs. The tranquil ambiance of the monastery offers visitors a space for reflection and reverence, connecting them to the deep-rooted spiritual and historical narratives of Samos.

Just a stone’s throw from the tranquil Spiliani Monastery lies the Eupalinos Tunnel, an engineering marvel that speaks volumes about the ingenuity of the ancient Greeks. Constructed in the 6th century BC, this aqueduct, also known as the Tunnel of Eupalinos, was an extraordinary feat.

Carved through solid rock and stretching over 1,036 meters, it was built to supply water to the ancient city of Pythagorio. Remarkably, the tunnel was excavated from both ends of the mountain and was able to meet in the middle – a testament to its creators’ extraordinary precision and skill. Venturing through this narrow passage, enveloped by the cool, damp air, one is transported back in time, walking a path that brilliantly showcases the ancient Samians’ prowess in engineering and construction.

Pythagorio Village

Pythagorio Village

Pythagorio Village is a picturesque coastal gem and a must-see on any trip to Samos. It is also a vibrant testament to the island’s most famous son, Pythagoras. As evening falls, the port transforms into a charming hub of activity. The waterfront is lined with an array of relaxed bars and restaurants, not the loud nightclubs one might expect but inviting spots where one can enjoy a drink and watch the world go by, along with the graceful dance of yachts and fishing boats on the water.

Noteworthy dining experiences include Elia, where Mediterranean flavors are artfully crafted, and Knife and Folk, a haven for steak enthusiasts. For those seeking a spirited evening, Gregorie’s bar offers an eclectic selection of cocktails in a lively atmosphere.

It is also the home of The Archaeological Museum of Pythagorion, which displays a vast array of over 3,000 artifacts, from marble statues to ancient coins and ceramic vases, encapsulating the island’s rich history from the 5th millennium B.C. to the 7th century A.D., and highlighting its significant cultural and political connections in the ancient world.

A short stroll away, the imposing Statue of Pythagoras stands as a proud reminder of the village’s heritage, capturing the essence of his enduring influence. Pythagorio is not just a tourist destination; it’s an experience that blends the joy of Mediterranean life with the profound depths of historical significance.

Pythagoras Cave

As I embarked on the trek towards Pythagoras Cave, the path felt like a physical and metaphorical journey towards intentional living. This cave, hidden amidst the rugged terrain of Samos, was where the legendary philosopher Pythagoras once sought refuge and enlightenment. Here, he fostered a community dedicated to mindful and purposeful living, an ethos that profoundly resonates with my pursuit of a more intentional life.

Legend has it that he used this cave for solitude and teaching. With its modest entrance, the cave opens up to reveal a space where history and legend intertwine.

The historical and educational importance of the cave is immense. It serves as a reminder of Pythagoras’ philosophical legacy and an inspiration for those of us seeking a life of deeper meaning and connection.

The effort to reach this secluded spot, whether by hiking from the nearby village of Votsalakia or navigating the bumpy track in a 4×4, adds to its allure, making the journey there a pivotal part of the experience. This cave, a sanctuary of ancient wisdom, invites us to pause and reflect on our intentions, making Samos an ideal destination for those on a path of self-discovery and mindful exploration.

Discovering the Art and Nature of Samos

Manolates Village and its Artistic Heritage 1

Manolates Village and its Artistic Heritage

Manolates Village, one of my favorite places on Samos, is a haven of artistry and natural splendor. With its long, steep, winding road, this charming village is not for the faint-hearted, but the journey is richly rewarded. At its heart lies a natural spring in Despina’s Taverna, a refreshing source of fresh water that has nourished the village for generations.

The village has experienced a remarkable revival, blossoming into a hub of creativity. Artisan shops line the streets, offering a treasure trove of handmade jewelry, unique gifts, and local produce, each piece reflecting the soul and skill of its maker.

At the pinnacle of Manolates is Loukas Taverna, a destination in its own right. The steep walk to reach it might test your resolve, but the reward is a refreshing plate of tzatziki and a cold Mythos with phenomenal views that sweep across the island. Here, amidst the beauty of nature and the pulse of artistic life, Manolates stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural richness of Samos.

Potami Waterfalls and Hiking Trails

Potami Waterfalls and Hiking Trails

Driving into the Potami region, a mandatory pause at the Agios Nikolaos Church offers an unusual architectural sight and a splendid photo opportunity of the sweeping beach below.

The real highlight, however, lies in the gentle 1km hike to the Potami waterfalls, aptly named after the Greek word for river. This hike, a blend of natural beauty and serenity, winds through lush woodland along the river, leading to the enchanting waterfalls.

For those seeking a more adventurous route, swimming through the river to reach the waterfalls offers an exhilarating experience. Alternatively, climbing the cliff face’s old, rickety wooden steps unveils a hidden gem – the Archontissa Taverna. The taverna, perched with a view, is a portal to a timeless world. The magical setting, woodfired oven-cooked food, and warm hospitality create an unforgettable experience.

The area’s natural beauty, enhanced by the waterfalls and the surrounding woodland, makes this spot a must-visit for any nature lover or hiking enthusiast on Samos.

Samos Culinary for Intentional Living Magazine

Samos as a Hiking and Culinary Destination

Samos, with its undulating landscapes and Mount Kerkis summit, becomes a hiker’s paradise, especially during the low season. The trails here, winding through the mountain regions, offer more than just exercise; they are a journey through a natural canvas, particularly in April when the island’s flowers and fauna are in full, spectacular bloom.

As someone who appreciates nature and gastronomy, I’ve always been captivated by Samos’s culinary scene. The island’s traditional cuisine, emphasising fresh fish, grilled octopus, and calamari, celebrates its maritime heritage. The abundant winter rains bless the land, enabling locals to grow organic produce, which often finds its way into the heart of their recipes.

There’s also a burgeoning modern culinary movement on the island. A standout for me is Orizontas restaurant at Platanos. True to its name, which means ‘horizon’, it offers an exquisite fusion of traditional and contemporary dishes, beautifully presented and paired with fine local and Greek wines.

The view from here, overlooking the mountains cascading down to the Aegean Sea, is as breathtaking as the food. Whether for lunch or dinner, a meal at Orizontas is an exceptional experience, encapsulating the best of what Samos has to offer to both hikers and food enthusiasts alike.

Staying at Studios Limnionas in Limnionas Bay was like uncovering a hidden gem that left an indelible mark on my heart. These newly built villas, four in total, blend luxury with serenity, each boasting an infinity pool that offers a breathtaking panorama of the bay. During my four-day stay, I felt nurtured in an atmosphere of unparalleled tranquility.

The staff’s warmth and helpfulness added a personal touch to the experience. The villas themselves are a dream, with the outside areas offering the perfect setting to lounge by the pool, prepare meals to be enjoyed on the terrace, and simply bask in the peace of the surroundings. The sunsets here are magical, and one night, under the glow of a full moon with Jupiter shining brightly in the night sky, I felt captivated by the beauty of the universe and how clearly we can view its treasures without light pollution. It’s an ideal spot for stargazers!

My time at Studios Limnionas was more than just a stay; it was a tonic for the soul. The overwhelming sense of happiness I felt there was a testament to the beauty and tranquility of the place.

Limnionas Bay is a quaint area with a sandy beach, clear waters, and a selection of coffee shops and restaurants. Its proximity to Mount Kerkis and traditional mountain villages offers a beautiful opportunity for exploration. Though close to Votsalakia, Limnionas Bay has a calmer, more secluded vibe, making Studios Limnionas an ideal retreat for those seeking relaxation and adventure.

Armonia Bay Hotel in Kokkari and Tsamadou Beach

My return to Armonia Bay Hotel, nestled above the pristine Tsamadou Beach, was a journey back to tranquility and self-discovery. This boutique hotel, where elegance and serenity converge, holds a special place in my heart. It was here, following the loss of my father, that I found solace and a path back to myself amid its peaceful and refined surroundings.

The hotel’s architecture harmoniously blends with the bay’s natural beauty, offering awe-inspiring views. The infinity pool and communal areas are thoughtfully designed to create a quiet reflection and relaxing space. With its inviting ambiance, the lobby sets the tone for a serene and luxurious stay.

Revisiting Armonia Bay Hotel, I was again captivated by its unique charm. The level of detail and thoughtfulness evident in every aspect of the hotel, from the cozy rooms to the dining experiences, reaffirms its status as a boutique haven. The breakfast, with local honey and homemade jams, and fresh, delicious lunch and dinner offerings showcase the island’s culinary richness.

My experience at Armonia Bay Hotel was not just a stay but a reaffirmation of the healing power of beauty and tranquility, wrapped in the warmth of exceptional hospitality.

Island Apartments in Psilli Ammos

Island Apartments in Psilli Ammos

The tranquil beauty of Psilli Ammos, with its soft sandy beach and the stunning backdrop of Turkey’s National Park, is a sight to behold. Staying at the Island Apartments waterfront studio, I found a slice of paradise where the gentle lapping of the waves serenades you right outside the window.

This studio, once a traditional fisherman’s house, has been lovingly transformed into a charming beachfront retreat. The simplicity of its amenities, including a kitchen and bathroom, perfectly complements the authentic Greek coastal living experience. Waking up to the sound of the sea and the breathtaking views was an everyday luxury.

The terrace is a haven of relaxation and beauty. With a dining table set against the backdrop of clear waters, swinging chairs, and hammocks, it’s an idyllic spot for unwinding and immersing oneself in the slow rhythm of island life. Time stands still here as you sip Greek coffee and gaze at the ever-changing seascape.

Just steps away are a handful of delightful restaurants, adding to the convenience of this location. There’s also a small bar open into the evening, perfect for enjoying a cocktail or two. However, staying on your terrace, soaking in solitude and the natural beauty, is just as enticing.

Psilli Ammos offers a safe and warm swimming experience, and in high season, a water taxi can whisk you to Pythagoras port for sightseeing. Having visited Psilli Ammos numerous times when I resided in Samos, the opportunity to stay and savor its peaceful charm after the day’s visitors had departed was truly special.
