“
In the pursuit of being right, we often lose sight of what truly matters – love. When we choose love over the need to prove ourselves, we open the door to deeper connection, understanding, and peace.

Exploring the Depths of Love
After 33 years with one man I have come to realize love is a vast and multifaceted experience, encompassing a spectrum of emotions, actions, and intentions. It’s more than just a fleeting feeling; it’s a conscious choice that we make every day in our interactions with others. It shapes us as we continue to evolve as individuals and then as a couple.
When we choose love over the need to be right, we embark on a journey of profound self-discovery and relational transformation. It’s about recognizing that love isn’t just about winning arguments or proving ourselves superior; it’s about fostering deeper connections and understanding with those around us to enable rapid growth and transcendence.
Rather than getting caught up in the ego-driven need to assert our dominance or prove our point, choosing love allows us to approach interactions with openness, detachment, humility, forgiveness, and kindness. It’s about prioritizing the well-being of ourselves and relationships over our own need to be validated or affirmed.
In essence, choosing love over being right is an invitation to embrace vulnerability, empathy, and compassion in our interactions, leading to greater harmony, understanding, and fulfillment in our relationships. Trust me I learnt this the hard, long drawn out way and my desire for you in this article is that you don’t learn that way but can piggyback on my coat tails at hyper speed.
It starts with taking accountability for our actions.
Openness
We can’t always agree with each other, nor do we need too. That doesn’t mean everyone who disagrees with us is wrong, or that we’re always right. The expansion in appreciating the differences allows us to self evaluate what is right for us, where we can grow and want our boundaries and standards. We get to sharpen our priorities and align in the contrast of the differences of opinion. It’s like you can’t appreciate sunrise and sunset without the contrast of the night. There’s so much to learn from the ideas and opinions of others when we stay open to listening to them.
When we give up the need to be right, we listen and communicate on a deeper level, with more understanding and acceptance, and with less judgment and resistance. This is how dialogues move forward and connections deepen. Also, our openness always magnetizes openness in those with whom we communicate, resulting in finding a solution together.
Detachment
It really is possible to be passionate about what we’re trying to express without being attached to how it’s received. When we are attached to what we’re saying, and to the need to be right about it, we often end up forcing our ideas on others, or distorting our beliefs simply to gain the approval of others.
Detachment gives us the freedom to communicate without the pressure of needing to be seen as right or validated. Through detachment, we can find peace with however our comments are received and with whatever direction a conversation takes. Who’s right and who’s wrong becomes irrelevant and is replaced with deep connection.
Humility
The need to be right is rooted deeply in the ego, and one thing our egos are not is humble. Ego is designed to protect us in battle at a primal level. Let’s take a breath and swallow our pride when someone says something we believe to be wrong. We don’t have to prove anything to them or ourselfs.
Even more, we need to be willing to be wrong ourselves. It’s not about compromising our truths, but about being humble within the expression of them and open to the expansion of others. It doesn’t matter whether we’re right or wrong.
What’s important is how we handle ourselves in either case. Are we choosing honor and love or righteousness at all costs?
Forgiveness
Though the need to be right enters all areas of our lives, it’s especially damaging during conflicts with those we love as they hold our deepest connections and weakness. When we believe we’ve been wronged, we often want to prove to the one who’s hurt or betrayed us just how wrong they are. We want to hurt them back creating a no win situation. Instead, if we focus on forgiveness we create an all win outcome.
Why? Because forgiveness is never for the other person. This is an illusion, forgiveness is actually for yourself. Without the forgiveness we continue to allow the other person and situation to take precious space in our hearts and minds. Storing the memories and pain only to be recalled as a weapon at a later date. Thus prolonging and compounding the problem with zero closer. Trust me, take it from a woman who held grudges for 20 years, it takes a toll on your mind, body and soul. Letting go is the most liberating and freeing expression of self love and compassion you can ever gift yourself.
Do not underestimate the power of expressing yourself – your needs, feelings and desires but when done with blame and shaming we degrade our personal power. Instead offering truth as fact without the need to assign blame not only claims radical self responsibility but also commands compassion and mutual respect.
They say opposites attract; by welcoming differences of opinions in a marriage/relationship we grow because we learn about our beloved and we also expand in our ability to question our thoughts with a new perspective. Seeing conflict as a learning opportunity has been the one of the greatest tools I have used in my marriage of 28 years. Leading to conscious communication, speedy resolution and inner peace.
Kindness
Dr. Wayne Dyer famously wrote, “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” Kind is a strength not a weakness. You may ask well in a heated moment it is very hard to be kind. Here is how I and my clients navigate this:
Step 1 – Breathe.
Step 2 – Give yourself a moment and ask yourself these questions:
Did I choose to love this person?
Do I believe they will harm me?
If you are in a healthy relationship you will answer ‘yes’ and ‘no’ respectively.
Take another breath and say nothing and listen, while internally telling yourself you are safe.
Often when we are in a defensive mode it is because we feel attracted. By regulating your nervous system with breathing and reframing your inner critic, you can access kindness for self first and then your beloved.
The intentional takeaway here is that it’s not about winning arguments or proving superiority; it’s about fostering deeper connections, understanding, and compassion with ourselves and those around us.
Let love guide our words, actions, and intentions, and watch as our relationships transform before our very eyes.
