Discovering Samos Island

BY RUTH A. HARGRAVE

In the refreshing embrace of an October morning, as the first rays of light danced across the Aegean, Samos Island – a hidden gem in the Greek archipelago – began to stir.

This island, a canvas of history and natural allure, was once my home, and returning now wasn’t just a homecoming but a journey of intentional exploration, a chance to rediscover the island’s secrets that have escaped me for so long.

Amidst the tranquil off-peak season, Samos reveals itself in a new light away from the usual hustle of tourists. It was an opportunity to reconnect with the island’s serene beauty and soul, unhurried and genuine.

Every step and interaction on Samos was a revelation, a new chapter in my Greek odyssey. From the island’s ancient pathways to its vibrant local life, this was more than a visit; it was a journey of profound connection, a quest to understand and appreciate the place and its people on a deeper level.

Where To Go

MARKOU OIL FACTORY – my visit to the Markou Olive Oil Factory in the charming village of Koumeika was a revelation in sustainable olive oil production. This family-run factory respects the age-old tradition of olive cultivation on Samos and embraces a zero-waste philosophy. They ingeniously use every part of the olive, with pits fueling the machinery.

The tour, hosted by a Markou family member, highlighted their meticulous process—from selecting olives to pressing them and ensuring quality control. We learned about their unique infusions, like rosemary and orange, which enhance flavors naturally. The visit concluded with a tasting of their exquisite oils, each variety leaving a memorable impression and a thoughtful gift of their premium blend, a true symbol of Samos’s rich olive oil heritage.

VAKAKIS WINERY – the Vakakis Winery embodies the rich history and culture of Samos, inviting visitors into the original family home for a glimpse of a simpler yet profound legacy. This family-run winery, known globally for its exquisite wines, pays homage to the island’s own Pythagoras, with wines named Pyramid, Theorem, and Pythagoras Cup, reflecting his philosophies of wisdom and harmony.

A tasting of their finest, including the sweet Epogdoon from the famed Muscat grape—enhanced by the island’s unique climate—was paired with local bread, cheese, and olives, making for a perfect blend of flavors and history.

CERAMIC PRODUCTION IN KOUMARADEI – driving through the mountainous heart of Samos, the journey from southwest to southeast immerses you in the essence of traditional craftsmanship. The village of Koumaradei is particularly famous for its handcrafted ceramics, where artisans with generational skills create masterpieces like the Pythagoras cup—a cleverly designed vessel that spills if overfilled, symbolizing moderation and showcasing the island’s philosophical legacy.

SPILIANI MONASTERY, CAVE CHURCH & EUPALINOS TUNNEL – perched on a hill in Pythagorio, the Spiliani Monastery is a tranquil haven known for its Greek Orthodox architecture with whitewashed walls and a striking belfry. The monastery offers expansive views of the Aegean Sea and below, providing a serene atmosphere accentuated by the occasional purring of sun-basking cats.

Behind the church, a historic cave starkly contrasts with its cool, damp air. It served as a refuge during Ottoman invasions and symbolized the island’s resilience and tumultuous history.

Near this peaceful site lies the Eupalinos Tunnel, an engineering marvel from the 6th century BC. This 1,036-meter aqueduct, carved through solid rock, demonstrates the ancient Greeks’ precision as it was dug from both mountain ends to meet perfectly in the middle. Today, it stands as a testament to the ingenuity and historical significance of ancient Samos, providing a deep, reflective journey back in time for its visitors.

PYTHAGORIO VILLAGE – nestled on the coast of Samos, is a picturesque and vibrant spot that honors its namesake, Pythagoras. As evening descends, the port becomes a lively scene with bars and eateries that replace loud nightclubs with cozy places perfect for sipping a drink and watching the harbor life. Notable restaurants like Elia offer Mediterranean cuisine, while Knife and Folk cater to steak lovers. Nearby, Gregorie’s bar serves eclectic cocktails in a vibrant setting.

The village also hosts The Archaeological Museum of Pythagorion, where over 3,000 artifacts, from marble statues to ancient coins, narrate the island’s history from the 5th millennium B.C. to the 7th century A.D. A short walk from the museum, the Statue of Pythagoras stands tall, symbolizing the philosopher’s profound impact. Pythagorio is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that melds the joy of Mediterranean life with deep historical roots.

PYTHAGORAS CAVE – embarking on the trek to Pythagoras Cave felt like a literal and metaphorical journey towards intentional living. This secluded cave, where the renowned philosopher Pythagoras once sought refuge, symbolizes mindful and purposeful living. According to legend, Pythagoras used this space for solitude and teaching, making it a site where history and legend merge. Reaching the cave, whether by hiking from Votsalakia or navigating a rugged track by 4×4, enhances its appeal, emphasizing the journey as part of the experience. This cave serves as a sanctuary of ancient wisdom, urging visitors to reflect on their life’s intentions and making it a perfect destination for those seeking deeper meaning and connection.

MANOLATES VILLAGE – a personal favorite, charms with its vibrant artistic community and natural beauty. This quaint village, accessible via a steep and winding road, centers around Despina’s Taverna, famous for its refreshing natural spring. The streets are lined with artisan shops filled with handmade jewelry and unique local gifts, reflecting the area’s creativity. At the village’s peak, Loukas Taverna offers a rewarding experience with its delicious local cuisine and stunning island views, embodying the cultural richness of Samos.

POTAMI WATERFALLS & HIKING TRAILS – driving into the Potami region of Samos, a stop at the Agios Nikolaos Church is essential for its unique architecture and the stunning views of the beach below. The area’s main attraction is the serene 1km hike to the Potami waterfalls, which takes you through lush woodland along the river. For the adventurous, swimming through the river or climbing rickety wooden steps up the cliff face are thrilling alternatives to reach the falls.

These paths lead to the hidden Archontissa Taverna, where you can enjoy traditional food cooked in a wood-fired oven amid spectacular scenery.

This spot, with its natural beauty and charming waterfall, is a highlight for any visitor to Samos.

SAMOS, A CULINARY DESTINATION – the island’s traditional cuisine, emphasising fresh fish, grilled octopus, and calamari, celebrates its maritime heritage. A standout for me is Orizontas restaurant. True to its name, which means ‘horizon,’ it offers an exquisite fusion of traditional and contemporary dishes.

When To Visit

The best times to visit Samos are June and September through mid-October. During these months, the island is less crowded and accommodation prices tend to be lower compared to the peak season of July and August.

The weather in early summer and early autumn is also ideally warm, perfect for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities without the intense heat of peak summer.

This makes it an excellent period for travelers looking for a more relaxed experience with plenty of opportunities to explore the island’s natural beauty and historical sites comfortably.

REFLECTIONS

Reflecting on my recent journey across Samos Island, I’m reminded of the profound legacy of Pythagoras, whose teachings continue to resonate with the ethos of intentional living. This island is not just a picturesque destination; it’s a living tapestry of history, culture, and natural wonders, each thread intertwined with the philosophy of mindful exploration.

From the mystical tranquility of the Spiliani Monastery to the ancient paths leading to Pythagoras Cave, each step was a journey through time, inviting introspection and a deeper connection with the world around me. The vibrant energy of Pythagorio Village, the renewable olive production in Koumeika, and the artistic pulse of Manolates Village – these experiences transcended mere sightseeing. They became gateways to understanding the rich tapestry of Greek life.

Samos, with its stunning landscapes and the rhythmic ebb and flow of the Aegean Sea, is a place where history is palpable, and the spirit of Pythagoras lingers in every corner. It’s a destination that urges travelers to set intentions to seek relaxation and enrichment, blending leisure with learning and relaxation with reflection.
