The Power of Elevation: Honoring the Women Who Inspire Me This Women’s Day

As I reflect on the journey of building Oculus Travel, I am grateful for the extraordinary women who have walked alongside me, lifting as they climb, sharing their wisdom, and embracing the true spirit of mutual empowerment. From the earliest days of this venture to the flourishing company it is today, my path has been shaped by the generosity, mentorship, and unwavering support of women who embody excellence, resilience, and grace.

But this story—my story—begins long before Oculus Travel was born. It starts with the first and most magnificent example of female competence I have ever known: my mother. She instilled in me the unwavering belief that true success is not achieved in isolation but through the elevation of those around us. She led by example, showing me that empowerment is a reciprocal act, a force that grows stronger when shared. Her wisdom and guidance shaped my ethos from a young age, teaching me that lifting others never diminishes our own strength—it multiplies it.

I also take a moment to honor the memory of my mother-in-law, a powerhouse of a woman who thrived in the corporate world at a time when women were told they had no place there. With sharp intellect, quick humor, and unshakable grace, she shattered glass ceilings long before it was fashionable. For 30 years, I was privileged to witness her navigate a male-dominated industry with both strength and lightness, proving that leadership and empathy are not mutually exclusive. Losing her in December to a brief battle with cancer was heartbreaking, and her constant presence as a sounding board and mentor will be sorely missed, but her example and legacy endure. She remains a guiding force in my professional life, inspiring me to lead with confidence and grace.

In building Oculus Travel, I have been surrounded by women who reflect these same values—none more so than my incredible business partners. Caroline Bayley-Geldenhuys and her team at Classic Escapes have been an unwavering source of support since the very beginning. Rather than seeing me as competition, they welcomed me with open arms, mentoring me, sharing their expertise, and extending their network so that I could build something meaningful. They could have guarded their industry knowledge, but instead, they chose collaboration over competition and generosity over gatekeeping. Three years later, our businesses have grown together, a testament to the power of elevating others. Watching them operate with such deep care and meticulous attention to every client’s journey has only deepened my admiration for them, and I am proud to stand alongside them in creating extraordinary experiences.

Beyond the travel industry, I have also had the privilege of working with women who are shaping their own fields with the same spirit of collaboration. As a contributor and luxury editor for Intentional Living Magazine, I have been welcomed into a beautiful community of women led by an editor whose passion is not just about storytelling but about uplifting the voices of others. She has created a platform where women’s expertise is celebrated, where success is shared, and where collaboration takes precedence over self-aggrandizement. Being part of this network has been a gift, a reminder that when we support each other with honesty and intention, we create something far more powerful than individual achievement—we create lasting change.

And yet, as much as I celebrate the women who have shaped my journey, I also recognize that true empowerment does not exist in isolation. It is not just about women supporting women—it is about building an ecosystem where men are equally valued as allies in the process. I feel very strongly that men play a crucial role in female empowerment, not as adversaries to be blamed or excluded, but as partners in progress.

Foremost among these allies is my husband, my greatest supporter, my trusted confidant, and my partner in all things. As we celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary the day before International Women’s Day, I am reminded of how deeply his unwavering belief in me has fueled my success. His encouragement, respect, and steadfast presence have been instrumental in every step of my journey, proving that true partnership is not about power but about balance, respect, and mutual elevation.

I would be remiss not to acknowledge my two beautiful, supportive sisters, whose encouragement and belief in me have been a constant source of strength, as well as the many incredible friends and women in my life who, though not specifically mentioned, have played an invaluable role in shaping the person I am today.

As I look to the future, I am more certain than ever that this is the path to meaningful success—not just for myself but for the world. Surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals who prioritize collaboration over competition, who seek mutual benefit rather than individual gain, and who understand that elevating others is the surest way to rise—this is what the world needs now more than ever.
