Journey to Wholeness: 6 Vital Steps

In a world where external demands and expectations constantly buffet us, losing touch with our authentic selves is easy. The “inner child” concept represents our innate sense of wonder, creativity, and joy. Yet, many of us, especially those grappling with anxiety, stress, and overwhelm, have lost connection with this essential part of ourselves.

Rachel Kraft is a specialist Breathwork Facilitator and Somatic Coach who believes fostering this connection to your inner child is vital to help us feel more grounded, confident, and resilient. Here are her six steps to get started:

6 Vital Steps To Connect With Your Inner Child

Acknowledge Your Inner Child

The first and perhaps most crucial step is acknowledging that your inner child exists. Your inner child holds your earliest memories, experiences, joys, and traumas. Though this part of you may have been neglected or hidden away, it is alive and well, waiting to be recognized. By acknowledging its existence, you’re paving the way for a deeper connection with your authentic self.

Reflect on Your Childhood

Take time to reflect on your childhood. Remember the things you loved to do, the places you enjoyed, the dreams you held. This isn’t about dwelling in the past but understanding the formative experiences that have shaped you. Reflecting on these memories can also help you identify moments of trauma or pain that need healing.

Practice Mindful Breathing

Like any deep relationship, the connection with our inner child requires presence. One effective way to cultivate this presence is through mindful breathing. As a breathwork facilitator, I’ve seen how powerful breathing can be, bringing full awareness to the rise and fall of your chest. This simple practice can quiet your mind, allowing you to listen more closely to your inner child.

Open the Conversation

Once you’ve established a connection with your inner child through presence, it’s time to communicate. This can be done through journaling, meditative dialogues, or even visualizations. Ask your inner child how they’re feeling, what they need, and how you can provide support. Remember to be patient and kind – it might take time for this dialogue to feel natural.

Heal Pain from the Past

Connecting with your inner child can uncover old wounds and traumas. This is where somatic coaching can play a crucial role. As a somatic coach, I help individuals recognize and release these old wounds stored in their bodies, facilitating deep healing. Addressing these wounds is essential – your inner child cannot fully express itself if it isn’t in your awareness.

Practice Self-Compassion

Your inner child needs compassion, just as any child does—practice self-compassion by being gentle with yourself, especially when you make mistakes or face setbacks. Speak to yourself with kindness and understanding, offering words of encouragement rather than criticism.

Embarking on this journey to connect with your inner child can be transformative. It invites you to explore the depths of your being, to heal old wounds, and to embrace the world with renewed curiosity and joy. Doing so allows you to cultivate a sense of grounding and confidence, providing you with the resilience to navigate the complexities of adult life.
